We have over 250 Youth on our waitlist
Join us on our mission to get a community focused boxing gym in every community in Aotearoa.
The Champions Initiative partners with local boxing gyms across NZ to see our vision fulfilled, Champion Young People Contributing to Their Communities. Our impact reports, feedback surveys and youth success stories show a long history of walking alongside young people from every background and helping them grow into champion people.
Our waitlists are increasing daily, and our response is to establish more Champions Partners to serve the need!

for every $1.00 invested the Champions Programme returned at least $6.27 of social value to the community.

Hear from our Good’s Supporter CookieTime
Cookie Time Charitable Trust is a longtime supporter of Champions Initiative. Established in 2003, the Trust’s mission is to help New Zealand kids discover their gifts. The Trust supports initiatives across three target areas: innovation in learning, thinking differently and physical pursuits. Champions Initiative vision to see ‘champion young people contributing to their communities’ aligns perfectly with the ‘thinking differently’ and ‘physical pursuits’ aspects of the Trust’s mission. The Trust also has a long-term partnership with the Champions Initiative partner Naenae Boxing Academy, including provision of One Square Meal bars for post boxing training and filling hungry tummies.
Ways individuals can help
Donate weekly from as little as $5 or give a one-off donation of your choice.
You will be supporting our academies to keep running and ensuring our young people have a place of refuge to develop into champion people and make the best life choices. You will be recognised as a Champion Giver and earn yourself a cool badge of honour.
Make a direct impact on an individual young person's future by sponsoring their academy terms fees for just $100 per term. This may not sound like a lot, but for many of our youth members, this is a cost their family struggle to, or simply can't afford.

Hear from our Champion Giver John Bromley:
I am in the 5th year of providing substantial financial contributions to Champions Initiative. Before doing so, I considered a number of organisations that I might support.
I choose Champions Initiative for a number of reasons, including
- they have very low administrative overheads, so virtually all the funds go direct to the “coalface”, where it makes a demonstrable difference
- they have a proven track record of “making a difference” to young people, most of whom, through no fault of their own, come from challenging backgrounds
- I totally resonate with the values they represent … respect, friendship, honesty
Leaving a gift in your will means you can forever positively impact the future of NZ's youth and help build better communities across Aotearoa. Our academies change lives, but the costs of running our organisation are far higher than the term fees we charge. Many of our youth member's families simply can't afford or struggle to even pay the fees. With the help of gifts from generous people we can keep our organisation going and keep our members enrolled and on the right path to a brighter future.

Volunteers are key to the Champions Initiative youth development model and vital to the success of our sporting endeavours.
We are always welcoming of volunteers to help run our member sessions for our various age-group classes for male and female participants. Full training (including child Protection training, First-Aid etc.) will be provided and we offer a development pathway from Community Coach to Head Coach level.
We also need volunteers to act as officials, especially for our Development Events. Again, full training will be provided for anyone wishing to act as a boxing referee, judge or time-keeper at local, regional, or national Champions Initiative events.
If you are a community-minded parent, carer or family member, athlete, coach or official, and are interested in volunteering to help the development our young people, please contact your nearest Champions Initiative Community Partner.”

Your support gives more kiwi youth access to life-skills through participation in and the discipline of boxing and physical fitness as well as to give them a place of refuge.
Here are common questions we come across when it comes to Champions Boxing Academies:
Amateur boxing, with its emphasis on safety and sportsmanship, offers a constructive way for young people to build character, maintain fitness, and learn valuable life skills. The sport instils important life values such as sportsmanship, humility, and perseverance, while developing focus, confidence, and the ability to deal with adversity and stress. It is also a very attractive activity to many young people, it is something they want to try rather feel forced to and they stay engaged for a longer period of time.
Amateur boxing, as a sport, has very stringent medical controls. Registration requires an annual medical, with another medical prior to every bout. Boxers are evenly matched according to age, weight, experience, and gender. Coaches at all Champions Initiative Academies are trained to deliver sound boxing techniques, while holding the appropriate licensing, along with first-aid, and child protection certification. Our programmes revolve around skill and fitness development, with contact during practice ranging from zero to mild for those who just want to train and compete.
Both youth and sports development research indicates that the greatest impact is made when as many individuals as possible are engaged, for as long as possible, and in the best environment. Our academies not only provide extended pathways for skill development and competition (for those that want it), but also provide the best environments possible.
